Aleksandr Nisse is a composer and organist whose work explores connections between contemporary music, ecological thought, and interdisciplinary practice. Trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Lionel Rogg and Nicolas Kynaston, and at the Conservatoire National de Région de Lyon with Louis Robilliard, he completed his PhD research in composition at TU Dublin under the supervision of Prof. Gráinne Mulvey. His work brings together classical technique, microtonality, improvisation, and collaborative experimentation.

A central focus of his recent practice is Pleonexia, a conceptual and artistic framework inspired by the non-profit-oriented coexistence found in forest ecosystems. Developed in opposition to capitalist extractivism, Pleonexia proposes musical and artistic structures grounded in reciprocity, interdependence, and mutual care. This philosophy informs Aleksandr’s ensemble writing, installations, and cross-disciplinary performance projects, positioning music as a medium for ecological and social reflection.

As Titular Organist of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Dublin, Aleksandr maintains an active liturgical and concert performance profile rooted in the organ’s classical and contemporary repertoire. In his composition work, he expands beyond this tradition by incorporating theatrical, visual, and electronic elements to create immersive, multidimensional forms. His notable works include Aiséiri (2019), performed at Bern Minster with a fluid notation system combining dance and music; The Eve of St. Agnes (2022), a microtonal organ work inspired by stained-glass art; and Pleonexia (2024–2025), an ensemble work exploring ecological interdependence and climate resilience. Pleonexia was premiered at the National Concert Hall (NCH) with Crash Ensemble as part of New Music Dublin, presented through the Crash Works programme.

Aleksandr’s work has been supported by the Irish Arts Council, TU Dublin, and Crash Ensemble, with recordings praised in Choir and Organ and BBC Music Magazine. He also contributes to Ireland’s new music community as an Associate Representative of the Contemporary Music Centre and a member of the Pipeworks Festival Executive Committee. His practice aims to create immersive, multidimensional experiences that challenge audiences to rethink their relationship with both the natural and social world.
